Rem is primarily known as the shinigami that gave Misa the Death Note that she uses during the series. As previously stated, Rem does have two Death Notes at one time, but did not receive his other one through trickery. The Shinigami Gelus, who had fallen in love with Misa and sacrificed himself to save her, lost his Death Note while Rem was watching his actions. Touched by this act, Rem delivers Gelus' Death Note to Misa as it was used to save her life.
